Mookie Betts was so excited he nearly tripped when his feet got tangled on the way to first base.

Boston’s normally mild-mannered right fielder let loose with some emotion after ending a marathon at-bat with a grand slam that helped lead the Red Sox to a 6-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday night.

”I almost went down Joe Mixon Jersey ,” Betts said with a chuckle after going 2 for 4 with five RBIs. ”I had to depend on my athletic ability and it came through that time.”

That ability has Betts leading the majors in batting and the Red Sox riding a 10-game winning streak to the best record in the big leagues. Boston has the longest current winning streak in the majors and hasn’t lost since getting routed 11-1 at Yankee Stadium on July 1.

Betts fouled off seven pitches from All-Star lefty J.A. Happ before driving the 13th pitch well over the Green Monster and out of Fenway Park to put the Red Sox up 5-2 in the fourth inning. Betts turned to his dugout and shouted at teammates in celebration, then almost lost his footing on the way to first base.

”Since I’ve been in the big leagues, that’s probably the most excited that I’ve been,” said Betts, who added an RBI single in the seventh and increased his batting average to .352.

David Price (10-6) struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings for Boston, and Craig Kimbrel earned his 29th save.

Teoscar Hernandez hit a two-run homer in the first and Kendrys Morales had a solo homer for Toronto, which has lost four of five.

Happ (10-6) started strong for Toronto, striking out six and holding Boston to two hits before running into trouble and some misfortune in the fourth. The Red Sox capitalized on a missed fly ball and a video review that erased what would have been the second out while scoring five runs – all unearned – before the inning ended.

”You’re not going to see many innings like that. I don’t think I could even describe it,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said.

Happ threw 46 pitches in the inning, 13 to Betts as he fouled off a string of five straight and caught a break when a popup bounced out of first baseman Justin Smoak’s glove after he ran it down in foul territory and attempted an over-the-shoulder catch. Betts worked Happ to a full count Josh Ferguson Jersey , then cleared the bases with his 23rd homer of the season and fourth career grand slam.

Happ loaded the bases with a walk to No. 9 hitter Jackie Bradley Jr., who was batting .202. Happ also threw a wild pitch while walking Bradley in an inning that was extended when Boston successfully challenged a force at second on a fielder’s choice.

”I felt good tonight and I felt like my stuff was sharp,” Happ said. ”I don’t know if they got a ball out of the infield before that homer, so that’s tough to take.”

After Hernandez’s two-run homer soared deep into the center-field seats, Price didn’t allow another run until Morales led off the seventh with another shot to center that pulled the Blue Jays to 5-3.

Smoak hit an RBI double on a drive to center in the eighth, when a fan in the front row interfered with the ball and Randal Grichuk scored to pull the Blue Jays to 6-4.

RECORD TERRITORY

Boston is on its longest streak since winning 11 straight in September 2016. At 66-29, the Red Sox are 37 games over .500 for the first time since 1949.

”It seems like everything is clicking right now,” manager Alex Cora said. ”The bullpen has been outstanding. The starters are going deep into games. Yeah, it feels that way.”

FAN FORGIVENESS

Price could hear the boos before Hernandez’s homer had a chance to land, but left to a standing ovation after allowing three runs and six hits.

Cora said Price deserved the recognition for recovering the way he did after the first inning. Cora said Price’s performance in the fifth after the long rally by Boston’s offense was a key to the Red Sox winning.

”David was outstanding Lamarcus Joyner Jersey ,” Cora said. ”I loved the use of the changeup back-to-back. We haven’t seen that in a while.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Red Sox: 1B Steve Pearce exited after the second inning, when he was hit on the left ankle by a pitch from Happ. Pearce needed several minutes before going to first base and was replaced by Blake Swihart in the top of the third.

UP NEXT

Blue Jays: LHP Ryan Borucki (0-1, 2.25 ERA) gets his fourth career start after a no-decision Sunday, when he held the New York Yankees to one run and seven hits over seven innings.

Red Sox: RHP Rick Porcello (11-3, 3.58) has won three of four starts and already matched his victory total from last season.

behind Patrick Kane in the 2007 draft. Now 29, he scored a career-best 36 goals last season and had a career-best 62 points two years ago. He will count $7 million against the salary cap through 2022-23.

This is by far general manager Ron Hextall’s biggest free agent signing and Philadelphia’s richest since giving goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov $41.9 million on a nine-year deal in 2011. The 6-foot-3, 217-pound forward provides the Flyers with scoring punch on the power play and could be a long-term replacement for Wayne Simmonds, who has one year left on his contract.

Veteran free-agent defenseman Jack Johnson has agreed to sign a five-year, $16.25 million deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

A person with direct knowledge of negotiations confirmed the agreement and terms of the contract to The Associated Press. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal cannot be announced until after the free-agency signing period opens at noon Sunday.

The 31-year-old Johnson spent the past six-plus seasons playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he had 36 goals and 118 assists for 154 points in 445 games. He has 12 seasons of NHL experience after being selected by Carolina with the No. 3 pick in the 2005 draft. The Hurricanes then traded Johnson to Los Angeles the following year.

The Penguins are retooling their blue line after trading Matt Hunwick as part of the deal that also sent forward Conor Sheary to the Buffalo Sabres last week.

The Minnesota Wild are bringing in a couple of veteran forwards Stephen Anderson Jersey , agreeing to one-year deals with Matt Hendricks and Eric Fehr.

A person with direct knowledge of discussions tells The Associated Press the Wild agreed to a $700,000 contract with the 37-year-old Hendricks. A second person with direct knowledge of talks says the Wild have also agreed to a deal with Fehr.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the contracts cannot be signed until the free agent signing period opens later Sunday.

Hendricks gets a raise from the $650,000 he was making with the Winnipeg Jets. He had 13 points in 60 games last season in largely a fourth-line role. The 32-year-old Fehr finished last season with San Jose and had four points in 14 regular-season games.

The Buffalo Sabres have reached an agreement to sign free-agent goalie Carter Hutton to a three-year, $8.25 million contract.

A person with direct knowledge with negotiations confirmed the deal to The Associated Press. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because contracts cannot be announced until the NHL’s signing period opens later Sunday. FoxSportsMidwest.com first reported the deal.

The 32-year-old Hutton has six seasons of NHL experience, including the past two with the Blues, where he split starting duties with Jake Allen. He finished with a 17-7-3 record and a 2.09 goals-against average in 32 games last year.

The Sabres have needs at goalie after electing not to re-sign third-year starter Robin Lehner and veteran backup Chad Johnson.

Hutton would form a tandem with Linus Ullmark, who is pegged to make the jump to the NHL level on a full-time basis after spending the past three years developing in the minors.

Star center John Tavares did not sign with the New York Islanders before midnight, taking an eight-year deal out of the equation and eliminating his old team’s biggest advantage.

As of Sunday morning, Tavares had still not announced a decision on where he will sign on what could be a seven-year deal worth upward of $70 million. The 27-year-old playmaker and his representatives met with the Islanders, his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs Zach Laskey Jersey , the San Jose Sharks, Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning last week.

Paul Stastny, who was traded from St. Louis to Winnipeg and produced 15 points in 17 playoff games, and Toronto’s Tyler Bozak are the next-best centers available.

9:45 a.m.

A person with direct knowledge of discussions tells The Associated Press that veteran forward Thomas Vanek is expected to sign with the Detroit Red Wings once the NHL’s free agency period opens.

The person spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity Sunday because talks are still ongoing, and teams are not allowed to announce deals until the signing period opens at noon Eastern.

Vanek is a 13-year NHL veteran and will return to Detroit, where he spent a portion of the 2016-17 season. He’s an 11-time 20-goal-scorer, and opened last year playing in Vancouver before closing the season with Columbus.

Vanek became the highest drafted Austrian-born player when the Buffalo Sabres selected him with the No. 5 pick in 2003.

Overall, he has 357 goals and 396 assists for 753 points in 965 career NHL games.

The top draw of free agency is forward John Tavares of the New York Islanders.
